This page is where you will find each activity that you are required to complete from Monday, April 25th to Friday, April 29th. Please read all of the instructions carefully, as you will be doing these assignments on your own. If you have any questions or need help, please see me. Your activities will be listed under the days that they need to be completed. Remember: Each class is 50 minutes long, you will be expected to finish each assignment in that time period unless otherwise stated by me. I will make your research a little bit easier by providing two websites that will give you information.
For the first assignment of this unit you will be using the Internet to research information about the Civil War. This research will help you with the next 4 assignments, so make sure you know enough information on the subject. To show that you have researched the subject, you will answer the questions listed here.
What issues led up to the Civil War?
What were some of the major events that took place during the war?
What was the outcome of the war?
What significant Constitutional changes were made?
How did the economy change after the war?
How did the government change after the war?
How were the peoples' rights affected?
List the Confederate states and the major generals.
List the Union states and the major generals.
Make sure you answer these questions in detail. Doing this will help you with the next few assignments and give you more time to work on them and not have to research everyday. Please hand in your answers at the end of class. They will be given back to you on Tuesday.
Tuesday - A Different World?!
Using yesterdays research, write an essay predicting what you think the United States would be today if the South had won the Civil War.
Be creative with it, don't just say "there would be slaves." Have fun with this assignment, it's like you're creating a new future.
Work on your essay in class, but take your time. You have until Wednesday to turn it in. The essay has to be 2 pages but can be more if you need it to be.
Please complete this essay using MS Word (provided to you on the computers). Make sure it is black, Times New Roman or Arial font, and double-spaced.
Wednesday - Brass Bands.
For this assignment you will create a short PowerPoint presentation about Brass Bands of the Civil War.
You need to include why Brass Bands were important to the Civil War, information about Brass Bands, and pictures. A minimum of 4 slides is needed (not including the title slide). I would also like you to dedicate a slide to what YOU think the members of the Brass Bands saw and experienced during the Civil War.
There is a folder labeled "teachers name" that you will save this presentation in. It will have all students presentations saved in it and will be able to be accessed by your teacher from any computer. Your PowerPoint presentation is due in that folder by the end of the class period today. If you need help saving it into the right folder, please don't hesitate to ask.
Thursday - Civil War Poster.
Using this website, Battle Summaries, create a poster of information about 5 different Civil War battles. You will be using Microsoft Office: Publisher to create your poster. You can choose whichever 5 battles you would like to include on your poster. Read through more than 5 and pick the battles that you think are the most interesting! On your poster, for each of the 5 battles you choose, please include; a short description of the battle, the number of casualties, which side one the battle, and any other information that you think is interesting. You do not have to use only this site, you can find out more information by searching the Internet by the battles name. This site is just for a reference to get you started on choosing which battles you want to include. I would also like you to include at least 3 pictures that relate to your battles. You will need to print out and hand in your poster by Friday, I will not accept them late. BE CREATIVE!
First Battle of Bull Run. Manassas, VA. 1861
Friday - Generals.
For your last assignment, you will be comparing and contrasting General Robert E. Lee and General Ulysses S. Grant by creating a Venn Diagram. These are two very famous generals that you should know about so you will do research and create your Venn Diagram. Do not make this a one word comparison and contrast. Give me details. I want to see what interesting facts you can find. I would also like you to have on your diagram somewhere which states was in the Confederacy and which states were in the Union. You will be creating this digram on MS Publisher so be creative, I don't want a white page with black writing. Add pictures, use color, spice it up, and give detail! You need to have at least 15 comparisons and 15 contrasts on your diagram. Your Venn Diagrams are due at the end of this class period. Please have them finished and printed out by then.
General Robert E. Lee surrenders at Appomattox Courthouse.Fun Fact: I have actually been to this battle field, along with many others.
